Fieke Snijder (1990) is a Dutch journalist currently living in Hobart, Australia. She holds a deep interest in Central and Eastern Europe and travelled extensively through the region. Fieke is intrigued by how history shapes societies and is always looking for untold stories with a human angle.
During her study of journalism Fieke specialized herself in writing from an international perspective. She graduated in June 2017, after being selected and completing an Honours program for advanced journalism students called Europe in the World. For her final exam Fieke travelled to Macedonia to write a range of stories on the country that struggles with national identity, corruption and economic turmoil. She graduated with a 9/10 and the articles written during her final exam led to publications in American, Polish and Montenegrin outlets.
In her third year Fieke did an internship at Dutch newspaper AD, after which she got hired as a freelancer at the online newsroom for two regions of the paper. After graduating Fieke coordinated for 13 municipalities the development of an online tool the paper created to help voters make their decision in the local elections held early 2018. For these municipalities the tool was used 70,000 times.
Fieke’s stories and pictures have been published in print and online in various outlets, including The Globe Post, New Eastern Europe, The Fix, Wall Street International Magazine, AD and nu.nl.
